OUR FEATURED NONPROFIT

Web Innovations and Technology Services

View Organization's Profile

“Reuse first, then Recycle” sums up the goal of Web Innovations and Technology Services. WITS is a non-profit 501 © 3 organization that is dedicated to under-served populations and nonprofits. Their aim is to provide technology in the form of computers and Internet access to the homes of working class consumers. With computers so necessary in many fields, and with the demands of education, it is important that all strata of society have the tools they need to compete in modern life.

At the same time, WITS recycles computers that would normally end up trashed in our over-stuffed landfills. Donated computers come from local/national organizations and companies. Computers are refurbished by fixing or replacing what may have been broken in the hardware. Anything non-reusable is appropriately and safely recycled.

WITS offers free computers to the community in exchange for different levels of support. These computers are PII class systems with 4-8 gig hard drive, 128MB, graphics & 16 bit sound, 56k V.90, fax/modem or NIC card, 15” monitor/keyboard, mouse, speakers, and free Internet.

Besides hardware, WITS supplies technical support for anyone who can’t afford the usual, expensive fees for setup and upgrades. For a flat rate they will troubleshoot and install or upgrade any components that are necessary. Unlike the medical profession, they do make housecalls!

WITS provides a free class on computer usage and the Internet to all participants who need it. It is hoped that each person who gets involved in WITS training donates time to teach others what they have learned.

Five main teams, made up of students and mentors, are: Web design, software programming, database, tech/networking, and business development. Volunteers are always needed in various capacities. Internships are also available, gaining valuable experience at teaching their skills with hands-on training.

WITS was founded in November of 2001 by Angela Haas.

Early this winter kids from all local communities were invited with their parents to experience a day of technology fun the Spring Tech Fling. Youngsters played games and contests with each other, while their parents had a chance to learn about the options available to them.

Several fundraisers are planned each year to help finance WITS’ programs: A School Raffle Competition hoped to raise 20k for WITS. This autumn the Great Renaissance Banquet will feature a silent auction, a formal dinner, a choral concert and an inspirational speaker, Senator Pat Dougherty.
