NAMI St. Louis-The National Alliance For the Mentally Ill's Walk On Saturday, May 28, 2005 NAMIWalks for the Mind of America was held at Forest Park. Supporters participated in a 5K Walk at the Upper Muny Parking Lot. Guests arrived at 9:00 am for registration and the official Walk started at 10:00 am as walkers enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Forest Park in downtown St. Louis. The NAMIWalks for the Mind of America is an annual nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program that is held in several communities around the country in 2005. It is expected that these walks will raise well over 3 million dollars for NAMI and the mental health services it provides to thousands of families across the country. Proceeds from the Walk will be used to fund NAMI’s programs. These programs include support, education, research and advocacy involving schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (manic depression), major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe anxiety disorders. Serving the St. Louis area since 1978, NAMI St. Louis is the local affiliate of a nationwide not-for-profit organization established by and for families of individuals stricken with severe mental illness. Severe mental illnesses are neurobiologically based diseases of the brain that include schizophrenia, bipolar affective disorder (manic depression), major depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder. As the only organization whose primary purpose is to serve families affected by these illnesses, we offer them support and education about mental illness and mental health services. Our purpose is to help them respond to mental illness in their family appropriately and effectively (therapeutically), from a base of knowledge and understanding rather than fear or stigma. Furthermore, we are among the most effective advocates for desperately needed improvements to the mental health care delivery system. Our mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals, and their families, living with severe and persistent mental illness.
