Menu: Salad included cabernet poached pear, baby lettuces, stilton cheese and spiced pecans with creamy champagne vinaigrette. The entree included grilled filet of beef with wild mushroom sauce and pan seared sea bass topped with tapenade braised spinach dauphinoise potatoes broccolini and carrots. Dessert was a bailey's milk chocolate mousse dome. There were wines, freshley-brewed Colombian coffee, decaffeinated coffee and slections of fine teas.

Arts and Education Council's St. Louis Arts Awards 2006 On Monday, January 30, 2006 The Arts and Education Council celebrated their 15th Annual St. Louis Arts Awards to honor artists, organizations, educators and businesses in our community for their contributions to the arts in the St. Louis area. The event was held at The Chase Park Plaza's Khorassan Room. The evening included cocktails, dinner and entertainment. KFUO-FM radio personality, Jim Connett, served as master of ceremonies. Chairs for this year’s gala were Judy Harris and Nancy Galvin, community volunteers and Cynthia J. Brinkley, President, AT&T Missouri. “We hope to raise $500,000 at this year’s event to benefit nearly 100 arts and arts education organizations supported by the Arts and Education Council throughout the St. Louis metropolitan region,” Harris said. St. Louis Arts Award honorees for 2006 include for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts, Joneal Joplin and Douglas Turpin; for Excellence in the Arts, Christine Brewer, Jazz at the Bistro and Herb Drury; for Excellence in Philanthropy, Anabeth and John Weil; Sachs Properties for Corporate Support of the Arts; and Joseph Schulte for Art Educator of the Year. The Arts and Education Council is a nonprofit organization which raises funds from the private sector to support the arts and arts education activities in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Well known actor in St. Louis since 1972, Joplin has performed in 86 productions with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis and 56 productions with The MUNY to date. He has also worked with The Black Rep, Shakespeare Festival of St. Louis, and some former St. Louis theatre companies, including Historyonics, Theatre Project Company, The New Theatre and Theatre Factory. Turpin serves as K-12 music teacher for the Parkway School District and is the Des Lee Endowed Professor of Music Education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. He has worked closely with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, coordinated the St. Louis Area Arts Education Collaborative, and offered over 400 programs per year to youth in the St. Louis community. A nationally renowned American Soprano, Brewer has appeared under the batons of Kurt Masur, Robert Shaw, Leonard Slatkin, David Robertson and Michael Tilson Thomas. Her repertoire encompasses the works of Mozart, Verdi, Mahler and Brahms and she regularly performs with many of the world’s leading orchestras including the New York Philharmonic; Cleveland Orchestra; Philadelphia Orchestra; The National Symphony Orchestra; Orchestre de Paris; the symphony orchestras of Chicago, Boston, London, San Francisco, Atlanta, Dallas and the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. Brewer closed Opera Theatre of Saint Louis’s 2005 season with Colin Graham’s new production of Britten’s Gloriana and recently performed for Prince Charles and Camilla in San Francisco. A prolific jazz pianist, Drury is often referred to as the “Godfather” of jazz pianists. He is an instructor at the University of Missouri St. Louis and gives private lessons from his home studio.
